DARKNESS MANIPULATION The power of darkness can come from many sources. Some are born with it, and some develop it in response to harsh light, among many other possibilities. The ability to "control darkness" is rather strange, when you think about it; darkness doesn't exist, it's merely the absence of light. But recent scientific studies have shed metaphorical light on this subject, and today we will explore it in detail. The core ability that wielders of darkness possess is to create and control a field that blocks light, thus giving the appearance of "controlling darkness"; stretching this field across the ground creates a creeping shadow, wrapping it around something creates a shroud of darkness, and so on. The field does not necessarily block all light, and in fact making it block all light will rapidly exhaust most users. It's much easier to create simple shadows that shade objects, or to block enough light to sufficiently obscure something. These fields can be created over an objects surface to darken or hide it, but can also be suspended in midair to shade an area like a parasol. Once created, maintaining these fields takes a bit of effort, and moving them is more tiring, though not as much as creating them. Experienced users can move and maintain small fields very easily, which is what you see in popular "magic shadow puppet" plays. A popular trope in stories is an evil shadow-wielder lashing out with tendrils of darkness to striking and strangling anyone in their way, or shooting powerful blasts of darkness like cannonballs. Aside from the harmful villainous stereotype, this is also not very realistic; no living darkness wielder can make their fields of darkness solid. There are records of wielders that can create solid fields, but this was a very rare ability, similar to famous lightning-wielder Arnold Thunder's ability to shape electricity into physical objects. For the most part, darkness manipulation is used simply to shade harsh light. Those with sensitive eyes are more likely develop darkness powers as a response to the pain and irritation of bright light. Despite the relative lack of practical applications compared to other powers, darkness manipulation can be a great convenience and comfort for those who have it.
